Unqua Elementary School and its PTA have joined forces to ensure that students continue to read. The two-week Pick A Reading Partner program, commonly known as PARP, runs from Jan. 19-29.
This year’s theme is “Read the Rainbow,” with students encouraged to read books from a wide variety of genres. There are several activities including in-school trivia questions, word puzzles based on different literary genres, and a reading contract in which each student pledges to read 20 minutes per day with his or her reading partner.
Because of health and safety protocols, guest read alouds went virtual this year. Parents are asked to post videos of themselves reading a book aloud, posting it to Twitter and tagging Unqua. The PTA also is coordinating a book donation drive for the Book Fairies.
Unqua students can stop by the Massapequa Public Library’s Bar Harbour branch to pick up a book and earn raffle tickets. At school, children submit their weekly reading meters and the grade that reads the most collective minutes earns a grand prize.
