Generosity on the Menu at McKenna
For each major sporting event, students at McKenna Elementary School show their generosity with a food drive. To celebrate the March Madness college basketball tournament, the Student Ambassadors club is spearheading a peanut butter and jelly collection.
The drive runs from March 21-25. Donations will be provided to the food pantry at Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Massapequa Park, which will then spread the items among pantries at several area churches. Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said that the school decided to collect peanut butter and jelly because those are among the most requested items at food pantries.
Students are doing their part to help others, recognizing that even small donations can make a big difference.
“You can spend five dollars to feed someone,” said fifth grader Donald H., a member of Student Ambassadors.
Added Emma B., “It’s important to help people who are less fortunate, so they can have food.”
The class that collects the most amount of peanut butter and jelly will win the golden basketball. This was McKenna’s third food drive of the year following a cereal collection for the World Series and soup donations for the Super Bowl. At the end of the school year, there will be a nonperishable food drive for the Stanley Cup.
