A book with messages of compassion, courage, friendship and kindness is engaging fifth graders at McKenna Elementary School, as they have been reading “Wonder” during the first few weeks of the school year.
Classes often head outside to the courtyard, where they gather at the picnic tables, to read and analyze “Wonder.” Students read passages of the book aloud, then participate in thoughtful discussion about the characters, plot and other literary elements. They also bring out worksheets to write down their observations, questions and thoughts.
“The students are so engaged in this book,” teacher Jaclyn Scorce said. “They make text-to-self connections and empathize with the characters.”
