McKenna Fourth Graders Journey into Native American Territory

The fourth grade Social Studies curriculum for Massapequa students focuses on the Native Americans of Long Island and New York.  As a culminating activity to this unit of study, McKenna fourth graders had a hands-on history lesson with educators from Journeys into Native American Territories.  The students had the opportunity to experience what life might have been like for the Native Americans. This hands on exploration brought an authentic Native American experience to the fourth grade students at McKenna. The students participated in assembly presentations which included highly interactive explanations of museum artifacts. The students learned about traditional Native American games and also had the opportunity to play these games. They learned about the form of government, had the opportunity to walk through a model of a longhouse and spent the afternoon creating traditional Native American clay pots.
