Celebrating Artists from Lockhart and Long Island

To bring more attention to local artists, Claire Merz, an art teacher at Lockhart Elementary School, created a Long Island artist bulletin board.

The display showcases artists from all over the island, from Brooklyn to the east end, who work in a variety of mediums. The Massapequa spot was left with a blank frame for Lockhart artists to fill. Second-grader Cassidy K. was the first student selected for the honor, with her Day of the Dead mask posted for all her classmates to see.

“Cassidy was chosen because of the enthusiasm she always brings to the art room as well as her creativity on her Day of the Dead mask,” Ms. Merz said. “New artists will be featured in the Massapequa location throughout the year to help art students realize their creative potential.”
