Poetry and pizza came together during a recent classroom activity at Fairfield Elementary School.
In their “Slice of Life” assignment, fifth-graders in the Magnet program with teacher Jennifer Tand wrote poems describing their personalities and interests. The poetry included metaphors comparing them to components of a pizza. Students then used materials such as clay, felt, construction paper, glitter and rubber bands to make pizzas that matched their poems.
Ms. Tand said that the project promoted problem-solving skills as children determined what supplies would work best to make their pizzas and toppings look as realistic as possible. A parent of one of the children who owns a pizzeria donated boxes so the youngsters could take their creations home.
