Learning through play was the theme on Feb. 5 at East Lake Elementary School which participated in Global School Play Day. Assistant Principal Mary Velte said that this was the first year East Lake has joined the worldwide movement that promotes the benefits of unstructured play. One of the premises of Global School Play Day is that children don’t use any electronic devices, but instead play with more traditional toys that foster positive social interaction. Children at East Lake brought in toys from home such as board games, cars, dolls and Legos for play hours in their classes. Second grade teacher Ashley Lindroth, who set aside time for unstructured play, said that it helps children work on valuable social skills like sharing and taking turns. Third grade teacher Annette Ready joined in the fun by playing some board games with her students.
