Just days into third grade, students at Birch Lane Elementary School are already thinking about aerodynamics. Kim Kelly’s class participated in a hoop glider competition on Sept. 17, testing their creations to see whose could fly the farthest.
In the classroom, students made their hoop gliders from limited materials including three index cards, a straw, tape and scissors. Each glider needed to include two loops attached to the straw. Once the young engineers finished building, they went out to the blacktop to fly their gliders and vie for the title of class champion.
