The American flag has changed many times in the last 250 years, and students learned about the evolution of that symbol of freedom during an assembly at Birch Lane Elementary School on June 11.
In honor of Flag Day, representatives from the Massapequa Elks Club showed different versions of the flag, from the pine tree flag that was adopted by the Continental Army to today’s flag with 13 stripes and 50 stars. They discussed the reasons for these changes to provide historical context.
Members of the band, chorus and orchestra performed patriotic songs throughout the ceremony. The third, fourth and fifth grade students in attendance wore red, white and blue and waved miniature American flags.
