As an introduction to their social studies unit on Japan, third-graders in Kimberly Kelly’s class participated in several hands-on cultural activities at Birch Lane Elementary School.
Ms. Kelly posted several photos around the room of landmarks in Japan for a see-think-wonder exercise. Students wrote descriptions and guessed what they thought was pictured, based on their background knowledge. They also used chopsticks to put different objects into bowls and made dogs using origami paper folding techniques.
The activities gave students an insight in Japanese culture and geography, while making comparisons to life in the United States.
