Birch Lane Elementary School students are being encouraged to “Chill out with a good book.” That is the theme for this year’s Pick a Reading Partners program, which runs through Feb. 8.
To kick off the three-week literacy initiative, the Hip Pickles visited the school on Jan. 23. The drum band entertained students with a variety of songs and rallied them with chants such as “Reading rocks” and “We love books.” As a special treat, students got to watch as their teachers came up on stage and played drums, maracas, tambourines and other percussion instruments. Even Principal Stephen Aspetti, Assistant Principal Joyce Larkin and Superintendent Lucille Iconis joined in on the fun.
PARP encourages adults to spend time reading with their children. Students will log their reading minutes at home and submit their totals each week. If they exceed the collective 206,767 minutes read during last year’s PARP program, Mr. Aspetti and Ms. Larkin will wear their pajamas to school.
