Twenty-three students squared off in the Berner Middle School auditorium on Jan. 14 to test their knowledge of national and world geography. After nine rounds, sixth-grader William S. emerged as the winner. He will now take a qualifying test for a chance to represent the district at the state geography bee in Albany.
All Berner students took an online geography test, and the highest scorer for each social studies teacher competed in the schoolwide bee. Topics included state capitals, international landmarks and map skills. William and eighth-grader Ricky C. competed in the final round, which featured three questions.
The geography bee was coordinated by social studies teachers Maria Casale, Josee Charvet and William Chlystun.
