Ames Students Learn How to Give the Gift of Life

Ninth graders at the Massapequa High School Ames Campus learned the many ways that they can save someone’s life in hearing from speakers from the Long Island chapter of the Transplant Recipients International Organization.

Volunteers from LI TRIO visited health classes on Feb. 5 and 6. The speakers included heart and kidney recipients and they shared their personal stories about how those organ transplants saved their lives. They also shared facts about organ donation including how many people receive transplants each year and how many are still waiting.

Jeff Fenn, a member of LI TRIO’s Board of Directors, told students about the different organs that can be transplanted from one person to another, as well as other donations that people can make including blood, bone marrow and tissue. He told the ninth graders that they are almost enough to donate blood, which they can do with parental consent at 16. Additionally, he dispelled many of the common myths that keep people from becoming organ donors. All students received green “Donate Life” wristbands.
