Picturing Art in a New Way at Ames

Using iPads, art students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus created large portraits of notable individuals at their school. The technology project was a team assignment in Nicole Hassell’s Studio in Art New Media classes.

Each student was assigned a small section of a portrait to recreate on the iPad using the sketching, painting and photo editing app ArtStudio. Once everyone was done, they put their iPads together to reveal the mystery person. Her four classes were each assigned a different person — Ms. Hassell, attendance officer Erik Lassen, Principal Tania Willman and Director of Fine and Performing Arts Kelly Anne Gelfer.

Ms. Hassell said that ninth-graders have used their iPads to create still-life paintings and sketches of human and animal eyes. Later this year, they will create stop-animation movies.
