Painting Earns Senior Prestigious Art Award

Massapequa High School student-artist Steven R. was recognized with a Juror’s Award in the Advanced Visions 15: High School Artist of Excellence exhibition.

Steven, a senior, was among 63 students from Long Island whose work was selected for the show, which ran from Dec. 11 through Jan. 9 at the B. David Schwartz Memorial Library at LIU Post. He additionally was one of only three students to earn a Juror’s Award.

The exhibit recognizes the superior artistic work done by high school students in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Portfolio Preparation art programs across Long Island. Steven’s AP studio art teacher, Gale Domingo, nominated his oil painting titled “Under Overcast” for the show.

Since ninth grade, Steven has been enrolled in several art classes including studio in art, studio new media, drawing and painting I and II and introduction to photoshop. While he plans to study law in college, Steven said that art will remain a part of his life.

The inspiration for his painting, which was completed as a summer assignment for his AP art class, is a scene from a park near his home. He said it was his first time using a palette knife as an artistic tool. Ms. Domingo said she selected his piece for the exhibition because of the sophisticated technique.

“Steven is a dedicated and passionate artist,” she said. “I was thrilled to give him the opportunity to exhibit his artwork and even more happy that he was one of only three students to be recognized with a Juror’s Award.”
