The Massapequa High School varsity football team played its first home game under the lights with the opening of a new athletic facility at Berner Middle School.
The Chiefs matchup against the Uniondale Knights followed a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 12 for Berner Stadium. Upgrades were funded from the community-approved 2014 bond and 2016 capital reserve fund, and included new turf field and track, bleachers, lights, concession stand and bathrooms. The football field was moved to be more centrally located in the athletic complex, and a new turf baseball field with lights was constructed at the north end.
John Piropato, director of physical education, health, athletics and recreation, said that while Massapequa High School will remain the home field for the football team, the new stadium at Berner now allows them to schedule night games, including for playoffs. He said his hope is that all Massapequa teams will be able to host at least one night game per season.
