    Dear School Community,

As shared in my previous emails, Massapequa Park has been designated as a YELLOW ZONE under the Cluster Action Initiative and therefore is required to test 20% of the population of the three schools within the 11762 zip code; namely Birch Lane, East Lake, and McKenna Schools.

As of this afternoon, Birch Lane, East Lake and McKenna Schools have all met the required 20% number of volunteers and will proceed with COVID-19 testing procedures as noted in previous communications.

Please note, it is imperative that all volunteers and parents of students who have been given consent complete all of the required paperwork and adhere to the testing schedule that will be forwarded to them from their building's administrative team.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and support during these challenging times.

  • 11/12/20 - Secondary Email

    Dear Secondary Parents / Guardians:

As we continue to see circumstances in which students are mandated to “quarantine” whether they are COVID positive, symptomatic or not, or have simply been exposed, we are adjusting and clarifying our protocol to benefit students who are physically able to continue to access their daily instruction via Google Meets rather than initiating Home Instruction immediately:

    • If a student is confirmed COVID positive in quarantine, and symptomatic, causing difficulty in accessing daily class instruction via distance learning, the understanding between the parent, student and teachers will be that Home Instruction will immediately be initiated. The Guidance Counselor will be the conduit of information between the home, teachers of record, and the Office of Curriculum and Instruction which facilitates Home Instruction.
    • If a student is confirmed COVID positive in quarantine, and asymptomatic, and able to access distance learning, the direction to the student, parent, and teachers, is that the student is expected to log in for each class, on-time, as a distance learning student. Teachers will hold students accountable for all instruction, work, assessments, etc.
    • If a student is mandated to quarantine, (including students returning from out-of-state travel, and those awaiting COVID test results), but is asymptomatic and able to access distance learning, the direction to the student, parent, and teachers, is that the student is expected to log in for each class, on-time, as a distance learning student. Teachers will hold students accountable for all instruction, work, assessments, etc.
    • In the case of a student in quarantine who is participating in distance learning, should the student become ill, have a doctor’s appointment, or any other circumstance that requires them to be called in as “absent,” the parent must call them out sick for that day. This is to be done on a daily basis when circumstances warrant.
    • Should that circumstance (student absence) last more than five days consecutive ,...then Home Instruction will be initiated. The Guidance Counselor will communicate directly with the Office of Curriculum and Instruction to initiate the Home instruction process.

As always, should you have any questions regarding any aspect of the protocols, please do not hesitate to speak with your child’s guidance counselor, or building principal. We appreciate your support and cooperation as we work to maintain the optimal instructional process as we also work to keep everyone healthy and safe.

    Sincerely,
    The Massapequa School District

    Dear Massapequa School Community,

We have received notification that a Berner student has tested positive for COVID-19.   The student who tested positive is isolating at home until he/she has met all conditions to return.  The Nassau County Department of Health has been informed of the positive case and has initiated an investigation.  Information regarding this student’s identity cannot be released and we appreciate your understanding and respectful cooperation in this matter.

The District has already contacted parents of those students who were in close proximity to the student and the NCDOH will now take over the contact tracing of those students. It is our understanding that the DOH will contact parents over the course of the next several days.

Following procedure, the District and NCDOH contacts individuals identified as close contacts to inform them of the next steps.  If you are not contacted by the District or NCDOH, then your child is not considered a close contact and therefore no further action is necessary.

All parents are reminded that they are required to complete our Daily Health Screening and Student Attendance notification form on the Parent Portal.  Closely monitoring your child for any signs of symptoms is imperative.

We are committed to providing our students and staff with a safe and healthy environment. Thank you for your ongoing support in adhering to our prevention protocols as we work to contain the spread of this virus.

    Sincerely,

The District was notified that a student at Berner Middle School tested positive for COVID-19. As we continue to support the DOH with contact tracing, we learned this student had greater contact with students and staff. As such, Berner Middle School will be moving to full distance learning for grades 6 - 8 for this coming week, October 19 - October 23.

All students are required to log-in to their teachers’ PowerSchool Learning classes to access their Google Meet codes and follow their normal class schedule.

The district will be sharing additional information with the school community tomorrow. As always, the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our priority.

    Sincerely,
    The Massapequa School District

Dear Massapequa Families, Faculty and Staff,

This evening, the District was notified that a staff member at Berner Middle School tested positive for COVID-19. Accordingly, the staff member will be quarantining and will not return to school until the District receives clearance from the DOH.

Since this information came to us just recently, we have not had an opportunity to work through the details of this case. After consulting with the DOH and in an abundance of caution, Berner Middle School will be closed to students and instructional staff on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. All students in Grades 6-8 will be on a distance learning model and are required to log-in to their teachers’ PowerSchool Learning classes to access their Google Meet codes and follow their normal class schedule. As a reminder, all students log-in to PowerSchool Learning and Google Meet with their Google username (username@msd23.org) and password.

Tomorrow’s building closure will ensure the District can thoroughly clean and disinfect all areas of the building. Additionally, the District will work collaboratively with the DOH tomorrow regarding any other measures that may be necessary.

We are closely monitoring this situation and will provide you with updates as we learn more. As always, the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our priority.

    Sincerely,

     Lucille F. Iconis

    Superintendent of Schools

    Dear Massapequa Families:

As we continue to monitor infection rates within the District, county and region, and remain mindful of guidance from the Governor’s office and the New York State Department of Health, we are periodically reviewing our reopening plan.

Consistent with the District’s approach of reopening schools in the safest manner possible, at last night’s Board of Education meeting, the decision was made to delay the return of our grade 7 students to full in-person instruction on Monday, October 19, 2020.

Thank you for your understanding, patience, and flexibility. We will continue to keep you apprised of any new information as it becomes available.

    Sincerely,
    The Massapequa School District

    Dear Parents/Guardians,

As shared in our Massapequa School District Reopening Plan, the re-evaluation of our current model occurred as scheduled during the month of September. In this regard, the Board of Education, during their September 24th meeting, charged the Superintendent of Schools to establish a plan to transition to the next phase of our reopening plan. Specifically, to transition our Grades 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12 students from a hybrid model to a full in-school model by October 19th. This phase only impacts our hybrid students and does not include a change to our optional distance learning model. The Superintendent of Schools will release more details in this regard early next week.

    Sincerely,
    The Massapequa School District

    Dear Parents/Guardians,

Since the release of the District's Reopening Plan, we have received many questions and inquiries ranging from the requirement of masks to the the possible option of Distance Learning.  In order to respond to the numerous questions in the most efficient way possible we will be posting a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) document on the District website.  It is anticipated that the FAQ sheet will be posted on 8/6/20.

In my letter dated, 7/31/20, parents were asked to complete a survey by August 7th if the option of total Distance Learning was being offered by the District.  This deadline will be extended to FRIDAY, AUGUST 14th in order to provide time for parents to make an informed decision with information provided in the FAQ sheet.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we await news from the Governor's office as to how schools in our region will open in September.  Please be assured that the health, safety and overall well-being of our students, staff, and community are the driving forces behind all decisions regarding the reopening of our schools.

     Take care,

    Lucille  F. Iconis
