Science Discovery Fair

  • The Annual Science Discovery Fair, sponsored by the Massapequa School District and the Massapequa High School Science Research Club, was held on April 6, 2019. The fair showcased more than 170 student participants from elementary grades K-5, the 8th-grade Introduction to Research course, and NEW! to this year's fair, the 6th and 7th-grade Makerspace program - showcased in the new Berner Library!

Students conducted experiments at home and presented their findings on poster boards. The fair is open to all kindergarten through fifth graders from the six elementary schools. There were approximately 100 projects as students could work individually or with partners. The young scientists explored a large variety of concepts including air pressure, electricity, genetics, structural engineering and more. Many children analyzed different foods and beverages, cleaning products and household objects.

Students in the high school science research program volunteered their time to help participants during the experiment process. They also served as science fair judges, along with several teachers. Trophies were awarded to the top finishers in fourth and fifth grades.

Science Research Program

  • The Science Research Program begins with Introduction to Research at Berner for students in 8th Grade. Research I and Laboratory Skills for Research are the courses for students in the first year of high school.  The research courses continue at the Main Campus, leading to the International Prep class for seniors.

If you have a strong interest in science, enjoy problem-solving and like science competitions, such as the Science Discovery Fair, you may be interested in the Science Research Program. Information about the program, application process and the forms can be found on our PowerSchool Learning class titled Science Research. All applications must be completed online.

Students are encouraged to join the Science Olympiad and the Science Research Club at the Main Campus.
