The Board of Education
-
The Board of Education consists of five members, each elected by the registered voters of the Massapequa Union Free School District, Town of Oyster Bay, for three-year terms, serving without pay. The Board, representing the residents of the District, is the legislative and policy-making body responsible for all regulations governing public education within District schools. The Board of Education delegates the overall management of these policies to the Superintendent of Schools as its Chief Executive Officer. The Superintendent may, in turn, further delegate authority to the administrative staff, to faculty members, and to students.

10/28/24: UPDATE to Opposition to Regionalization Plans
We are writing to inform you of a significant development that will profoundly impact the future of our school district. The New York State Education Department (NYSED) has recently introduced an Emergency Rule regarding the implementation of a Regionalization Plan. This plan has the potential to fundamentally alter the structure and identity of our
district, with long-term implications for our community. In response, and in an effort to preserve our local control, Massapequa UFSD has taken the following actions:- Drafted and sent a letter of concern and opposition, signed by the Board of Education, the MFT President, and Superintendent of Schools. This letter has been sent directly to the Deputy Commissioner of Education, expressing our deep reservations regarding the plan.
- Discussed this initiative and our concerns thoroughly in a public session at the October 24, 2024 Board meeting. A video of our discussion is located on our YouTube Channel BOE Playlist.

09/22/23: Mascot Community Letter Follow-up
Dear Massapequa School Community,
As we promised our community in June when we adopted a resolution in accordance with the New York State Education Department’s directive regarding prohibitive mascots and imagery, it was our intention to retain the right to challenge the decision through litigation. Through the official filing of our lawsuit, we have kept that promise.
It is our hope that we can share the true Massapequa story. The Chief is more than a logo to our schools and community. It is our history and our heritage. When we speak of the Massapequa “Chief,” we do so with pride and respect. As a Board, we are united in our efforts to stand up for our community and years of tradition. We thank the Massapequa community for their support as we navigate this process.
As we say in Massapequa, “Once a Chief, Always a Chief.”
Sincerely,
The Massapequa Board of Education

6/23/23: Mascot Community Letter
In compliance with the State directive, we passed a resolution by the deadline with a plan and the first step of our plan is to litigate to maintain the name and/or imagery. Pending the outcome of our litigation, we will enter the next phase of our plan.
