The Board of Education
-
The Board of Education consists of five members, each elected by the registered voters of the Massapequa Union Free School District, Town of Oyster Bay, for three-year terms, serving without pay. The Board, representing the residents of the District, is the legislative and policy-making body responsible for all regulations governing public education within District schools. The Board of Education delegates the overall management of these policies to the Superintendent of Schools as its Chief Executive Officer. The Superintendent may, in turn, further delegate authority to the administrative staff, to faculty members, and to students.

3/15/24: Statement from the Massapequa Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. William Brennan
On behalf of our entire community, the Board of Education and superintendent would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Supervisor Saladino and the Town of Oyster Bay, and Commissioner Ryder and the Nassau County Police Department, for their collaborative efforts in addressing the ongoing safety concerns posed by the Budget Inn Motel located in close proximity to Berner Middle School. For several years, the motel has been a site of frequent police activity, often associated with suspicious activities. Such activities have no place in the vicinity of our schools, and we have consistently advocated for measures to address these concerns.
We remain committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all members of our school community, and we appreciate the support and partnership of the Nassau County Police Department and our local leaders in achieving this goal.

09/22/23: Mascot Community Letter Follow-up
Dear Massapequa School Community,
As we promised our community in June when we adopted a resolution in accordance with the New York State Education Department’s directive regarding prohibitive mascots and imagery, it was our intention to retain the right to challenge the decision through litigation. Through the official filing of our lawsuit, we have kept that promise.
It is our hope that we can share the true Massapequa story. The Chief is more than a logo to our schools and community. It is our history and our heritage. When we speak of the Massapequa “Chief,” we do so with pride and respect. As a Board, we are united in our efforts to stand up for our community and years of tradition. We thank the Massapequa community for their support as we navigate this process.
As we say in Massapequa, “Once a Chief, Always a Chief.”
Sincerely,
The Massapequa Board of Education
