Register now for Parent University, a workshop series designed to arm parents with effective strategies for handling the most pressing issues facing their children today. Berner Middle School Students Compete in Geography Bee
Students from Alfred G. Berner Middle School competed for the first time in the National Geographic Geography Bee, giving them the opportunity to share their knowledge of where places are located around the world.

Berner Middle School Kicks off 50th Anniversary
Alfred G. Berner Middle School was a sea of red and white as students and staff members kicked off the 50th anniversary celebration wearing the school’s original colors. Staff members who graduated from Berner marked the school’s opening week by sharing their memories during homeroom announcements. Student Musicians Receive Kudos for Participation in NYSSMA All-State Music Conference
Sixteen students were recognized by the Board of Education for their participation in the NYSSMA All-State Conference held in Rochester. East Lake Students Create Valentines for Veterans
To show their appreciation for veterans and the service they gave to the country, on Feb. 1 students at East Lake Elementary School participated in a school-wide writing activity titled, “Valentines for Veterans.” Honing their artistic and writing skills, students created beautifully designed cards with heartfelt letters and inspirational messages. Number of Athletes to Play College Sports jumps to 24
Twelve more senior athletes have signed Letters of Intent to play college sports, bumping the number up to 24 to date. On February 1, National Signing Day, seniors from the boys and girls soccer teams, football, boys and girls track and field, and field hockey inked letters to participate next year at various colleges along the east coast, with intentions of studying majors such as early childhood education to pre-medicine.

Fifth and sixth graders in the Magnet program at Birch Lane and East Lake elementary schools turned their knowledge of trivia into funds for the United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Nassau County.
Students participated in a 100-question general trivia challenge and, after receiving sponsorships from families and friends, raised more than $1600, enough to purchase a communicating computer for a non-verbal student, according to UCP representatives.

New Transportation Supervisor Joins District
The District welcomes Keyana Wright as Supervisor of Transportation. In this position, Wright is responsible for coordinating and supervising the efficient operation of transportation facilities and staff. She brings more than 15 years of experience in the transportation industry, including the supervision of operations for 250 employees. Wright holds a bachelor of science in business administration from the University of Phoenix. She said of her new role, “I look forward to working with others to create and implement new ideas to benefit the district.”

Janice Kincaid...First Language Teacher on LI to Earn Nat'l Board Certification
World Language teacher Janice Kincaid was awarded National Board Certification after an extensive process of mastering assessments and meeting rigorous teaching standards. She is the first language teacher on Long Island, and one of only 37 in the state, who has achieved this distinction.
Kincaid’s advanced credential places her among the ranks of the nation’s most accomplished teachers who are highly skilled in helping students succeed in the 21st century. Her accomplishment was recognized during a recent Board of Education meeting.
